Stepping out in style

Walking Football for those over 50 years-of-age has become an international phenomena with new groups popping up all over Europe. East Algarve Walking Football is at the forefront of the sport in Portugal and, after welcoming numerous UK teams to the region, they will be travelling to Marbella, Spain on the 10th/11th May for their first foreign foray.

Preparing for the mini Walking Football tournament

The 106th Anniversary celebrations of Sporting Clube Olhanense included a mini Walking Football Tournament featuring teams from EAWF Olhão, Boavista Strollers (Lagos), EAWF Tavira, and SC Olhanense Veterans. It was the SCO Veterans who won the day on goal difference from EAWF Tavira after both teams finished level on points.

Sue Charles joined the SCO Veterans team and slotted home several goals. Mike ‘The Cat’ Hawe attended the event as a spectator and, despite being injured, agreed to go in goal for EAWF Tavira. His performance was spectacular, making several outstanding saves.

Ohlhanense Vets in action

Sincere thanks to Alan McGovern who officiated, and how pleasing it was to have a referee making strong but fair decisions. A particular welcome was extended to Paul Cumiskey from Dublin who was on vacation in Montechoro near Albufeira and took two trains to get to the Olhão session on Thursday. He then joined us on Sunday and made it all the way to Tavira the following day. Dedication from our new Irish friend.
