Probably our most regular attendee, Charlie Cousins, celebrated his 70th birthday last Saturday with a true Sarf London knees-up held at the Beira Rio Restaurant/Black Anchor Pub in Tavira. The majority of the EAWF fraternity were in attendance to help him celebrate this milestone and present him with many weird and wonderful gifts.
Charlie certainly enjoyed himself, saying “Thanks to everyone who came on Saturday; thanks for all the wonderful gifts and cards, and thanks for making it so special for me and Penny.”
Charlie attends every session of the EAWF week, with over 50s on a Monday, over 60s on a Tuesday, running football on a Wednesday, and over 50s again on a Thursday. We give him Friday off to recover! We are sure one day he will learn to understand the “minimal contact” criteria for walking football; until then, we just try to avoid being anywhere near him without full body armour!
He is also the most loyal participant for every social event we run, having not missed a party or an excuse for a drinking session in all the time he’s been here; truly the life and soul of any occasion.
Happy Birthday, Chopper!
Over a Thousand Years!
Also, when Charlie celebrated his 70th birthday last week he became the fifteenth member of East Algarve Walking Football to notch up ‘three score years and ten’. With a combined age of over a thousand years the septuagenarians, ably assisted by a few younger members, presented Cockney Charlie with a commemorative mug, Millwall T-shirt and restaurant voucher. Charlie was born in Camberwell the year that Britain’s first supermarket opened in London, post-war bread rationing ended and Princess Elizabeth gave birth to Charlie’s namesake!
Charlie’s birthday party at the Beira Rio Restaurant was attended by over a hundred guests and a raffle raised €240 for the EAWF Olhão Defibrillator Fund.
