A “proper” footie match on December 17th……

In a departure from the norm, we are trying to arrange a “proper” 11-a-side footie match (normal football rules etc) on Saturday 17th December against “Destination Football FC”. Time and venue are to be confirmed (but it will be a proper stadium). We do need to know if we can get the numbers needed before we commit, so can anyone who wants to play let us know asap by commenting below.

Only commit if you are sure you can make the Saturday match and  understand that it will be normal football (i.e. tackling/running etc all allowed). The opposition will be probably a bit younger than us, but hopefully our experience will make up for it! No age limit for those that want to play……..

Walking Football Kicks Off IN Sao Bras

Under a clear blue sky eighteen mature players put their best feet forward as São Brás de Alportel welcomed its first ever Walking Football session for those over 50 years of age.

This is a slow version of the beautiful game with no running on or off the ball; minimal contact, no slide tackling or tackling from behind. For the newcomers it was definitely a case of self discipline as the natural reaction is to break into a jog!

Thanks to the efforts of Alex Moreira and Ian Lowe and with the support

Malaga to Moncarapacho

When you have won the English FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Scottish League title, Scottish League Cup, and been capped by your country, there cannot be many challenges that would excite a 57-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur captain.

England international Graham Roberts is patron of Centre Algarve, Europe’s only dedicated holiday centre solely for people with special needs. Thanks to years of tireless effort by volunteers from across the world, Centre Algarve, which is situated near Moncarapacho, has now received its operating certificate from the local authority. Graham will be cycling from Malaga on a 400+kms adventure starting at Malaga Football Club on the 8th October when another Spurs Legend, Ossie Ardiles, will start the event as he covers the first few kilometres on his moped!! Graham will lead a team of five cyclists – John Parkhouse, Jack Parkhouse, Ash Mahoney and Lee Roswell – on the epic ride up through Spain before crossing the Guadiana river at Ayamonte for the final leg. The intrepid adventurers are due to arrive at Centre Algarve on the 15th October.

Graham Roberts said, “This will be the longest and most challenging bike ride that any of us have done. The Centre is fully equipped to allow people with special needs, young and old, to experience a wonderful holiday with their family or carers. We have created an environment where everybody feels comfortable, safe and secure within our wonderful grounds. A magical and unique holiday centre where fun and memories are created. To help us open up the centre to even more deserving special needs guests, please, please sponsor our team of cyclists and help us reach our target.” The Spurs Legends have played Walking Football against Soccer Olhanense Strollers for the past two years and will be playing them again next April. To sponsor Graham and his team please go to: www.mydonate.bt.com. Every cent raised will be used to give a family and/or young person and carer a very special experience. www.centrealgarve.org

World Class Players at the Algarve Stadium

Belgium, a team packed with a host of world class talent, are Gibraltar’s next opponents at the Algarve Stadium on Monday 10th October kick-off 7.45pm.

The Belgium squad includes sixteen English Premier League players with Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City) and Romelu Lukaku (Everton) leading the charge towards qualification. On the 12th September Lukaku ended his drought of 1,139 minutes without a goal, as he went on to score a hat-trick and help his side beat Sunderland. He scored his hat-trick in 11 minutes and 37 seconds, making it the 12th quickest in Premier League history. Other players to look out for are Thibaut Courtois & Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Jan Vertonghen (Spurs), Marouane Fellaini (Manchester United) and Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace). Lukaku (2) and Yannick Carrasco (Atlético Madrid) scored in Belgium’s 3-0 win in Cyprus earlier this month whilst Gibraltar lost 4-1 to Greece.
